The Paul Newman Rolex Daytona and Datejust
When we think of those who have worn a Rolex, we instantly think movie stars, politicians, and sports celebrities. One person stands out in our mind, Paul Newman. He was a philanthropist, entrepreneur, race car driver, husband, and yes, an actor. He was most noted for being a rugged, handsome man who you were immediately pulled towards. He won an academy award for his role in “The Color of Money,” where he wore a Rolex Datejust. His character notes in the movie, he wears a Rolex because it is the “best."
What many Rolex enthusiasts treasure is the Paul Newman Rolex. Specifically, the Rolex Daytona Reference 6239, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264 or 6265. It is known for a specific dial shown in the image below. It was never noted by Rolex as Mr. Newman’s actual watch, but Rolex collectors treasure this watch. Paul supposedly wore this Rolex Daytona until his death in 2008. Also, to note, the Rolex Daytona that he wore was given to him by his wife. Obviously, she knew a good timepiece when she saw it!
A few unique facts about the “Paul Newman” Rolex Daytona: it had a Valjoux cal. 72 movement. Rolex did not make its own Chronograph’s up until recently and used the Valijoux chronograph movements in all of the Daytonas. It is the only modern Rolex that does not use an actual in-house Rolex movement. Recently, Rolex designed its own in-house chronograph movement for the Daytona. Also, the sub-dials (the dials that are the opposite or contrasting color of the main dial) of a Paul Newman dial have block markers instead of lines. It will have cross-hairs across each sub-dial meeting at center (unlike the normal Daytona), and the seconds sub-dial placed at 9:00 is marked at 15, 30, 45 and 60, whereas a normal Daytona dial is marked at 20, 40 and 60. The dial may or may not have the word “Daytona” written on the dial above the hour sub-dial located at 6:00. The dial came in four color and layout combinations and was installed as an option by Rolex on the Daytona line of watches.
Paul Newman has made countless movies that we all treasure and love. His charities and businesses have given hundreds of millions of dollars to those in need. He truly is an Everest Man, one who stands on top of the World!
